Photo of the baby doll the hospital used to train my husband and I how to take care of Grace's Broviac line.

Journaling:

Your BROVIAC line had been surgically placed while you were in PICU in Arizona. We had hoped you wouldn’t need this

extreme measure for blood draws, but your little veins in your arms, hands and feet couldn’t take anymore pokes.

Pa and I decided that although this required you being put under anesthesia again it was necessary so we could continue

the multiple blood draws each day and keep a close eye on your sodium levels. Once it was installed the nursing staff

were responsible for all the cleaning and associated care to ensure the BROVIAC remained clean and open for your frequent

blood draws. It wasn’t until we reached the Pediatrics unit in California that Pa and I had to be trained to properly do

the daily flushing of the line and the weekly and very painful bandage changes. It was our final hurdle before we’d be

able to take you home. I have to be honest it was one of the scariest things I’ve ever had to do as any improper cleaning

could have lead to serious infection. You as always were a strong little girl through every minute of each cleaning. One

of our happiest moments was when we were given the green light to have it removed and no longer had to put you through

those painful cleaning sessions.
