Journaling: "You haven’t always had an easy time making friends since you started school and I assure you it’s been a struggle for me to watch you grapple with your insecurities, although not as difficult as it is for you to cope with them. I have always been a firm believer that we gain strength of character through adversity, but there have been days when I’ve wondered just how much strength of character a little boy really needs. Tonight while we were eating dinner, just the two of us, I was asking you about your day. You shared that at recess Omar and Ameer have been playing with Annaliese and Madi, and that they’ll let you play with them - but not your friends Matthew and Colby. You and Omar have been best friends since kindergarten, and I know that a situation such as this puts you in an awkward position. But you choose not to play with them because doing so would exclude your other two friends and you know how that feels. Your dedication to fairness and justice is so far beyond your years, and at times your unbending resolve to follow rules and make sure that everyone is treated equally has only served to alienate you from some of your classmates. The pressure at your age is to fit in, and being invited into an exclusive club - ANY exclusive club - holds so much appeal amongst your peers. You didn’t seem as though you struggled with the idea at all, though. You explained how you’ll allow anyone to play with you, no one is turned away, and that Omar and Ameer (and Annaliese and Madi) are welcome to join you at any time - but only if everyone is included. Your grasp of compassion amazes me and fills me with such pride. Also your nonchalant acceptance of your fellow students’ shortcomings, and your ability to not hold it against them and be willing to accept them with open arms should they choose to embrace ALL of your friends, not just a select few. I realize that the easy way out would have been to feel intoxicated by that invitation to be one of the “elite chosen few” - and I hope one day you’ll read this, at a point in your life when you’re surrounded by loyal friends who hold so much respect for you, and know that even at 7 years old you knew how important it was to treat your friends the way that you would want to be treated - the way that you so desperately wanted to be treated in the years where your friends were the ones leaving you behind. Because good things really do come to those who wait, but more importantly - good things come to those who have the strength to make good decisions."

what a kid. amazing. love that you put this down for him so that years from now he can read it and know what you thought of all this -- and that he'll be able to see it from a different perspective and see why it is such a big deal.
